The Pop-up Museum

The Pop-Up Musuem started as an experiment in #culturalplacemaking. Our assumption being a dead car parking space that is at close proximity to iconic cultural heritage places could act as a connector tying the narratives of the Kangla Fort, Polo Ground, the State Museum, and the Ima Market into one seamless continuum. So, we went about transforming the car parking space using elements like pavement paint, an art installation, recycled seating, potted plants, audio-visual media, and some shading. For three days, through careful programming, the space transformed into a vibrant performance and gathering space. Then, gradually, as people started making it their own, new unintended activities started popping up, such as skateboarding, free play by kids, free sketching by art students, speed walking space by the elderly, etc. The key learnings we derived from this experiment are:

(1) the need for a flexible space that can accommodate different user needs
(2) the need for different activities at different times of the day
(3) the need for a space where non-motorised transport is given priority
